Blazers 113, Golden State 100
Written by O Storm!

What a great game to be a fan.  Nothing gets a crowd going like a huge dunk or a big block and last night was full of both.  There's Travis hammering down a fast break, there's LA rejecting a shot, look out for Brandon's alley-oop off the inbounds pass.  Your butt barely hit the seat before you were back on your feet and screaming for more.  This was definitely a fun one to watch.

The part of the game that put the biggest smile on my face was how easy the win seemed in spite of how it started.  We couldn't get a shot to fall and Golden State was able to build an early double digit lead but we didn't panic.  We stuck with the game plan, kept running the offense and good things started happening.  In the last few years it seems like we have been the team on the other side of this equation, coming out hot against a better opponent only to see the lead crumble and slip away as the game wore on.  That is exactly what we did to Golden State last night and it felt good.

The win last night could best be described as "Spectacularly Unspectacular".  Everyone played well, yet no one stood out.  This was a game we were supposed to win and by the time the dust setttled it was a fun, easy victory.  The lead swelled to 18 at one point but it never seemed like we played that great.  Now that we are through the difficult part of our schedule there are going to be a lot of opponents like this on the calendar and this is exactly how we need to play.  For the rest of the season there are going to be a lot of games where we are the better team and it is important that we play like it.  If last night is any indication then we have nothing to worry about.

Go Trailblazers!

BLAZERS

WARRIORS

EDGE

COMMENT

Jamal Crawford has been a very good source of offense for the Warriors with all of their injuries.  He's sort of a combo guard, but a very talented one.  He'll be called upon to do much of the scoring and passing with Stephen Jackson out.  I don't think Blake can keep up with him, but Jamal isn't a very good defender so look for Steve to get off some open looks.

It looks like our leader will be back on the floor tonight against Golden State.  While he was out the Blazers were 2-2 which is quite admirable.  Hopefully this game gets out of hand early and Roy can rest up, either way though, he will dominate Bellinelli who is in only because of injuries.  Although, Marco has had a few decent games so he isn't a complete slouch.

When Potland lost to Golden State earlier this season the Warriors were playing a small line-up which had Maggette frustrating LaMarcus Aldridge.  With all the injuries, this team has gone to a more traditional line-up.  I don't know if Maggette will guard LA but he is significantly more productive than Batum so he gets the nod here.

I bet LaMarcus has been looking forward to this game.  He had one of his worst outting against Golden State in November. Against Anthony Randolph he should be feasting tonight, Randolph is a project player who isn't much of a basketball player yet.  He, like Bellinelli, is playing due to injuries and his inconsistencies are troubling for the Warriors.  He reminds me of Tyrus Thomas, plenty of potential, not enough experience. Aldridge dominates.

Biedrins has become a very skilled big man in the league.  His knack for getting rebounds and ability to run the floor make him a gem for Don Nelson's offense.  He'll get his double double tonight, and I think he gets the best of Oden.  That doesn't mean Oden won't have a great game but Biedrins is averaging 13 and 15 in his last 6 games. Tough to stop that kind of production.

Even though these Warriors have only won 10 games and are severely limited by injuries, they're still dangerous. We can't have a letdown of any kind and Joel Przybilla will be a key to keeping the team focused.  Also, Rudy may not play so Travis will be relied on for offense off the bench.  Golden State's bench includes Ronny Turiaf who can bang inside and Anthony Morrow who was the flash in the pan that contributed to Portland losing in Golden State.  Look for a very different result tonight, Blazers win!

The Saga Continues, Darius Miles, Darius Miles
Written by Sheed

UPDATE: It looks like the Grizzlies have signed Darius Miles, ignoring the threat from Portland.  I'm tired of talking about it right now so click on over to read the ESPN report.

According to ESPN, the NBA player's union plans to file a greivance against the Portland Trail Blazers.  It is now becoming the biggest story anywhere on a day where I suppose the Celtics playing the Cavaliers should have been the NBA news. I guess if Darius really wants to play, and is able to, he should be allowed to pursue the game.

But I still don't have much sympathy for a guy who will get paid ridiculous jack for doing nothing, who didn't give a crap about Portland when he was here and was able to be a member of the community.  I think he took everything for granted prior to the prognosis from the league appointed doctor, and now that he is almost out of the league he really does want to play.  I hope there is a rational conclusion to all of this, right now I can't see any end in sight.

I do however like this part from the ESPN article, Mark Cuban has our backs:

Although the Blazers have exposed themselves to censure from the league office for the tone of their note to fellow teams regarding Miles -- as well as the hostile reaction from the players' union -- one team did express some sympathy for their position Friday.

"It's a lot of money," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told ESPN.com on Friday, referring to millions in future salary-cap space that the Blazers could lose if Miles' contract is restored to Portland's payroll.

"For that much, I would be sending e-mails, too."

Darius Miles Situation Just Went Critical
Written by Sheed
Friday, 09 January 2009 09:02

Veryearly this morning, Sports Illustrated dropped a bomb regarding news of the Darius Miles situation.  Apparently the Blazers released a letter to other NBA teams saying you better not sign Darius. My first thought was, good job Portland, way to be tough.  Then I thought about the possible backlash and the hate we all might soon be hearing. I'm still at a loss and not able to write more, so I'll let Dave at Blazer's Edge give you the full scoop. Here's the letter too:

"Team Presidents and General Managers,

"The Portland Trail Blazers are aware that certain teams may be contemplating signing Darius Miles to a contract for the purpose of adversely impacting the Portland Trail Blazers Salary Cap and tax positions. Such conduct from a team would violate its fiduciary duty as an NBA joint venturer. In addition, persons or entities involved in such conduct may be individually liable to the Portland Trail Blazers for tortuously interfering with the Portland Trail Blazers' contract rights and perspective economic opportunities.

"Please be aware that if a team engages in such conduct, the Portland Trail Blazers will take all necessary steps to safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation."

Jerryd Bayless; My thoughts and a Nickname.
Written by Sheed
Thursday, 08 January 2009 21:32

When it comes to the Trail Blazers, there are multiple thoughts that bounce around in my head.  Some come and go, others are merely fleeting thoughts, but then there are those that just won't go away.  My feelings on Jerryd Bayless won't go away.  Since he played at Arizona and made his way up the NBA draft board, I've been all about this guy.  Watching him play alongside Chase Budinger at Arizona, I began to enjoy Jerryd's game immensely. In high school Jerryd was a super star and it wasn't much different at Arizona.  When Lute Olson left the team and the offense changed, Bayless was asked to play more of a shooting guard, in reality he was a combo guard with a brighter future as a passer.

As the 2008 NBA draft approached, I remember constantly scanning NBAdraft.net, Oregon Live, & anything else I could get my hands on. I decided early on that Bayless was the best fit for Portland.  Westbrook, Augustin and Chalmers were all certainly options, but I wanted Bayless.  As the draft loomed, Bayless was towards the top of the point guard list. During the draft, Jerryd started to fall and when we managed to get him, my excitement could not be contained, the Trail Blazers final piece was here in my opinion.

As we all know Jerryd tore up the summer league, winning MVP and looking extremely proficient as a scorer.  It was still unclear whether he'd get much playing time as a rookie with two other point guards who had earned their minutes for Portland.

Fast forward to earlier this week, through 34 games of the season, Bayless hadn't really played much.  He'd gotten garbage time, but in those spurts he looked overwhelmed and skittish.  He was going to need serious playing time in order to get accustomed to the NBA. It took another game without Roy and an opponent like Allen Iverson to finally get Bayless more than just a few minutes, he'd be called upon to stop A.I.

If you looked at the stat line for Wednesday night's game against Detroit you wouldn't think much of what Jerryd accomplished. 8 points on 2-6 shooting from the floor, 4-4 from the free throw line, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 17 minutes. LaMarcus had the big game, not Jerryd. If you read the recap or listened to the post game, you'd know that Outlaw hit the game winning shot, not Bayless.  What Jerryd did that was so important, was turn the team around in the 3rd quarter, similar to what Brandon would try to do. Jerryd started taking it to the hoop, drew fouls, and started to get emotional, which was something Portland was lacking in the first half.  Jerryd showed us an ability to get to the hoop, athletic ability with 2 steals and one impressive dunk, and overall got the game going in the right direction.

The bottom line is that Jerryd Bayless needs to play more. Oden and Batum have been playing all year and although they've had rough patches, things are getting better for each of those rookies. The question is how do we get Bayless more run?  It starts by giving Sergio less time.  I like Sergio, I think he is good for Rudy, but Sergio is one-dimensional and a liability on defense. Sergio's shot is slightly better this year, but he still looks to pass even when he is point blank for a lay-in. There have been times this year where Steve Blake couldn't keep up with his man, but Bayless most certainly would have.  Most of the criticism abut Jerryd is his shoot first mentality on a team full of young stars. I think he's well aware of his need to be a distributor and I've seen that happen at times when he does actually play.

The future I envision starts with Bayless and Roy in the backcourt. The great thing about those two together is that both should compliment each other so well.  Bayless can handle point guard duties early on in games, while Roy will most certainly become the captain of the offense down the stretch.  Bayless can guard the opposing point guard with no worries about saving energy for offense.  The important part about this scenario is that it can happen a lot sooner then most are expecting.

For years we've waited for Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster to mature, but Bayless is much further along in his development then they ever were.  Bayless, given the opportunity for more minutes this year, will be ready to contribute next year.  I see him as our starter by the end of next year.  Steve Blake becomes the second man off the bench and this would probably mean Sergio is gone.  But at some point, someone's gotta go and there is no way it's Jerryd... he's just too stacked with potential.

JB

Now, on a lighter note, what should Jerryd's nickname be? I've seen different things floating around the internet and it appears B-Rex is the frontrunner according to Blazer's Edge readers and even Wikipedia. There is also Scrappy from Scooby Doo, or even other names like JBay, JB, etc, etc. Anything but Playless! Let me know what you think his nickname should be, chime in below and even add a name in the comments if the choices don't fit your fancy. Sooner or later our point situation will change.  The faster we get Bayless going, the sooner our future success will arrive.

Any win without Brandon is a good win, especially when it comes against an Eastern Conference power on a seven game winning streak.  It may not have been pretty but it was a big win and it certainly was exciting.  Despite being down double digits for most of the first three and a half quarters, we managed to claw our way back and pull out the W after dodging a last second bullet from Allen Iverson.  Wins like this go a long way toward building toughness and confidence, traits that will be vital once we reach the playoffs.

There is one reason and one reason only that we won this game:  Jerryd Bayless.  Mike Barrett couldn't have been more right when he proclaimed in the third quarter that this was Bayless' coming out party.  It took 35 games but Bayless was given some extended minutes (17) and he made the most of them.  The Blazers had looked lost, listless and uninspired until Jerryd lit a spark in the third quarter.  He single handedly set off a flurry of steals, free throws and fast break dunks that clawed us within striking distance.  By the time the third quarter came to a close we were only down three and the crowd was roaring.  The game was still in doubt but at least it was a game again.  None of that happens without Bayless and his heroics.

That isn't to say that other people didn't play well.  LaMarcus stepped up as a bona fide scorer (26) for which Detroit had no answer.  Blake ran the offense to perfection, distributing the ball (10 assists) and hitting the big three when we needed it.  Joel banged with the best of them and left it all on the floor.  All three had solid games, but isn't that what we expect?  LA is supposed to be our #2 option and a legitimate threat on every possession.  Blake has proved time and again this year that he is a capable point guard that understands the players around him and knows how to run the offense.  Pryz has proven 1,000 times over that he is our heart and soul - no one plays with more passion and toughness - and that he is the backbone of this team.
As for the rest of them...
  • Rudy had a solid night but it has become clear at this point that he is a role player this year.  He's a great player that oozes potential, but he's a rookie and he occasionally will disappear for extended stretches and become a non-factor.
  • Oden still needs time.  He shows flashes of brilliance but he needs to develop.  When Pryz is playing this well he deserves the crunch time minutes with the game on the line.  Right now Oden's play is not directly tied to the success of this team and his maturation is not a #1 priority.  A watched pot never boils.
  • Outlaw is only as good as his last play.  He played well once Bayless lit a fire and he came through in the clutch, but where was his head in the first half?  He was lost, sloppy, ineffective and I place a large chunk of the poor first half on his shoulders.  He is the only player on the team whose game doesn't fit in and it affects the other guys on the court.  He's a black hole on offense and a liability on defense.  He's a hero today but he'll be the goat soon enough.  Am I the only one that is nervous every time that he has the ball?
  • Sergio needs to go.  It's not that he's a bad player, he just doesn't fit with what Nate is trying to do.  His natural inclination is to run, but Nate has him so concerned about running the half court offense that we routinely see lifeless possessions that grind the shot clock down without setting up a good shot.  I thought our days of 24 second violations were gone when we shipped out Jarrett Jack, yet they seem to be cropping up more and more with Chacho running the second unit.  With the emergence of Bayless isn't it time to cut bait and let him run with a team that knows what a fast break is?
This was a great win and one to be proud of for sure.  Trade rumors and player discussion are going to swirl in the void of the next few gameless nights, but let's not forget the things we have learned over the last few games.  Enjoy the win, keep things in perspective (21-14 is damn good and well beyond anyone's expectations) and get ready for the next one. Go Trailblazers!

Memphis says; Thanks for Coming Out Darius Miles
Written by Sheed
Wednesday, 07 January 2009 13:06

Last night, Darius Miles was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies.  That's him confirming which way to the exit.  This partially insures no hard feelings towards Memphis from the Blazers organization.  It also proves to a degree that Darius can't play, even for a bad NBA team.  I will never forget the first time I heard about Miles, freshman year of college I saw the Sports Illustrated magazine cover with him and KG on the front.  I always thought he wouldn't be as good as KG and as it turned out, he went in a very different direction.

I was never happy that Darius was in Portland, his attitude stunk and he always felt he deserved to be treated like a super-star, when he didn't even play like one.  Besides the salary issues relating to Miles I would like him to stop attempting to get back at the Trail Blazers.  The Doctor was right, the knee is wrecked, time to take all that unearned money and put it to good use, elsewhere.

UPDATE: Rule clarification moves Portland two Darius Miles games away from disaster.

BLAZERS

PISTONS

EDGE

COMMENT

Rodney Stuckey is on another planet right now, the former Eastern Washington stand-out has been playing crazy good ever since Billups left. Apparently the Pistons made the right move. Steve Blake will try his best but Stuckey is just too good.

Despite shooting a poor percentage as of late, Iverson continues to be half point guard during the Piston win streak.  I think he is a tough match-up for Rudy who has been struggling lately.  Hopefully Rudy gets back on track, but he won't be better than AI.

Prince's numbers have been inconsistent this year but recently he's been very efficient and very good.  He is a key piece for the Pistons and part of the reason they are winning.  Batum was a stud on Sunday but I don't know if he can outscore or out defend the guy who he is so often compared to.

LaMarcus had a great game statistically on Sunday and I'm hoping he can build on that against Detroit. Amir Johnson has been filling in at the forward position while Rip Hamilton is out.  He doesn't do much offensively but the team doesn't need him. LA wins here.

Rasheed is coming off of an injury and will probably be a little off in this one. His numbers are also not great anymore anyway. I think he'll be guarding Greg and I expect Oden to build on a solid last few games.  Look for him to pound it inside with smaller opponents coming at him. Greg wins.

BENCH

BENCH

Przybilla is going to have a big impact defensively on this game, his presence will be key.  Travis is coming off a terrible game in LA and  he'll bounce back in the Rose Garden.  Look for some motivated play from our bench considering all the trade talk and Detroit's bench isn't going to do squat.
